Breast Cancer Awareness Month: HMU Ladies Stands with You
October · Breast Cancer Awareness Month
A message from Olivia: we stand with you
At HMU Ladies, breast cancer awareness is close to my heart. This October, we honor survivors and stand beside the friends and family whose lives have been touched by breast cancer.
To every survivor, every person receiving treatment, every caregiver and every loved one: we stand with you. Your experiences matter. You deserve care, compassion and support in October and throughout the year.
For us, wearing pink is a way to start a conversation and show solidarity. That conversation also needs to include breast health, access to screening and the everyday ways we can be there for one another.
Why mammograms matter
A mammogram is a breast X-ray that can detect cancer before symptoms appear. Screening can help find breast cancer earlier, when treatment may be easier; it does not prevent cancer.
The CDC explains the USPSTF recommendation: women ages 40–74 at average risk should have a mammogram every two years. Screening has benefits and possible harms, including false alarms and missed cancers. Discuss your age, family history and personal risk with a healthcare professional to decide when and how often to screen; higher-risk people may need a different plan.
If you notice a new lump, nipple discharge or another breast change, contact a healthcare professional promptly rather than waiting for your next screening. Read the CDC’s symptom guidance.
Cost should not stop the conversation: the CDC screening page links to a program offering free or low-cost mammograms for eligible people.
Support goes beyond wearing pink
A caring check-in, a meal, a ride to an appointment or help with everyday tasks can make someone feel less alone. Ask what would be useful instead of assuming, and respect their privacy and how much they want to share.
You can also encourage a loved one to speak with their healthcare professional about screening. Offer to help them find information or arrange an appointment if they want support. Every person’s experience is different, and there is no single right way to feel.
